Malta’s First Pollinator Observatory: A Private Sector-Led Milestone in Conservation

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the EI Pollinator Observatory. This long-term monitoring hub is Ecostack Innovations' latest effort in combining innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and community engagement to foster pollinator conservation through community engagement while aligning with broader European biodiversity objectives.

While pollinator monitoring has traditionally been the domain of public institutions, the EI Pollinator Observatory marks a significant shift, showcasing how the private sector can take the lead in addressing pressing environmental challenges.

A Unique Approach to Conservation

Dr Mario V. Balzan, Director at Ecostack Innovations, explains: “At Ecostack Innovations, we leverage our expertise in data-driven modelling, ecological research, and stakeholder engagement to create resilient frameworks for pollinator conservation. The EI Pollinator Observatory bridges corporate sustainability goals with actionable solutions, empowering businesses to enhance reporting, engage communities, and lead in biodiversity conservation while driving long-term value.”

Through collaboration with stakeholders, we aim to equip individuals and communities with tools to monitor pollinator populations and work with communities and businesses to create pollinator-friendly spaces and integrate sustainable practices.

The EI Pollinators Observatory builds on the work carried out by Ecostack Innovations, including through the BEEPOLL Space Fund project funded by Xjenza Malta which has integrated remote sensing, Internet-of-Things (IoT) logging sensors, field data to monitor pollinators and the MAMBO Project #HorizonEurope project which is augmenting biodiversity monitoring through automated biodiversity monitoring.

Supporting the EU Pollinators Initiative

The observatory directly contributes to the objectives of the EU Pollinators Initiative, which aims to tackle the decline of wild pollinators and ensure their protection across Europe. Our efforts align with the initiative’s key priorities:
